Press Release by Phee Boon Poh, State Exco for Welfare, Caring Society & Environment and Vice-Chairman of Penang Green Council on 13 June 2013
We would like to extent our invitation to all recyclers to join us in an upcoming program; you will be able to share your contacts and suggestions on how to reduce waste to Pulau Burung landfill to make Penang greener and cleaner.
The details for the launching session are listed below:
Date: 18 June 2013 (Tuesday)
Time: 11.00 a.m.
Venue: 5th Floor, Auditorium C, KOMTAR.
The main objective of the Zero Waste Network Launch is to give recognition to the supports and efforts of Department of Environment (DOE), Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP), Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) and also all the recyclers that have registered with either municipal councils or DOE to provide their contacts.
Zero Waste Network (ZWN) is a database search tool that allows citizens to search for the nearest recycling and/ or buyback centers locations and contacts in Penang. Up-to-date, a total of 102 recycling and/ or buyback centers locations and contacts in Penang have been stored in the database. The purposes of building the ZWN are to shorten travelling time and reduce carbon footprint, and to increase the efficiency of recycling and/ or buyback processes, as well as making waste to useful resources and creating opportunities for Zero Waste Economy.
ZWN offers several options for citizens; users can custom search by Company Name, City, District, Waste Category, and Type of Operation. For instance, the custom search on districts is divided into five districts such as North-East Penang Island, South-West Penang Island, North Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and South Seberang Perai, which allows citizens to find any recycler near them. Waste category listed in the Zero Waste Network includes Recyclable materials, E-Waste, Food Waste, and Reusable materials. Custom search also covers Type of Operation, such as Collector, Processing, Recycler, and Recovery.
“No Free Plastic Bags and 3R” program was launched in 2009. In 2011, Penang achieved recycling rate at 23.8% which exceeds the target set by the Federal Government (22%) for 2020 and it is proud that we are nine years ahead of time. The State Government have also initiated Car- Free Day, BEST and CAT bus services in order to promote low carbon lifestyle through the reduction in the amount of vehicle used by residents. In year-end of 2012, we have also put a blanket ban on polystyrene food containers.
Your trash is my treasure. Zero Waste seeds green and create job and business opportunities. We believe Zero Waste is a positive alternative to the landfill and incineration as it raises community awareness. As a result, we will soon see the seedlings of Zero Waste Economy.
After the State Government held a Zero Waste dialogue with the recyclers last year (2012), we hope to improvise the collection and recycling value chain in Penang; increase our recycling rate in Penang and eventually make Penang a resource efficient society.
All recyclers are invited to join the Zero Waste Network Launch. Your attendance and involvement will motivate more commitments to make Penang cleaner, greener, healthier and safer. In order to expand the Zero Waste Network, we welcome all the recyclers/ Zero Waste Entrepreneurs in Penang to submit their complete particulars at pgc.com.my/zerowastenetwork. To confirm your attendance, please contact our Secretariat, Penang Green Council at 04-250 3321/ 3322 or [email protected].
