Press Statement by Chow Kon Yeow, State EXCO for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation cum Vice-Chairman of Penang Green Council on 15 March 2016:
“Waste Segregation at Source” Poster Drawing Competition for All Students in Penang
The rapid economic development and population growth in the state have resulted in a tremendous increase in solid waste generated. However, significant amount of these waste can be recycled and reutilised if they are separated at source.
In order to reduce waste to Pulau Burung Landfill and promote recycling, Penang State Government has set June 1, 2016 for the enforcement of the Waste Segregation at Source Policy throughout the state.
Waste separation at source in Penang is the process of separating solid waste produced at source into at least two streams in accordance with the composition of solid waste, namely recyclable “clean and dry” waste (paper, plastic, aluminium cans) and “wet waste” garbage. The policy is aim to sustain the environment, to reduce cost of waste management and to reduce waste generation to the Pulau Burung landfill.
In conjunction with the policy which will be implemented, PGC is organising a poster drawing competition themed “Waste Segregation at Source” for all the students in Penang. The main objective is to nurture and increase awareness of separation at source among young generation. Submit your creative poster and stand a chance to be selected as one of the state official posters for the new policy!
There are two categories for this competition: Primary School and Secondary School. Total cash of RM 3,000 will be given out to both students and schools for each category. Submit your entries before 14 June 2016. Award presentation ceremony will be held during the Penang Green Carnival 2016 on 23 and 24 July 2016.
