Give Your Pre-Loved Items a Second Chance, Join Zero Waste Barter Trade Now

Press Statement on 23 May 2019

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, let’s give our pre-loved items a second chance by trading them with the others! In conjunction with the World Environment Day celebration 2019, Zero Waste Barter Trade will be held by Penang Green Council on 23rd June 2019 at Straits Court, Straits Quay Penang from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.

Jointly organised with JCI United Penang and supported by Tesla and GEMS International School of Pearl City Penang, this is a special event to instil the participants on practising the 5R concept – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle in their daily lifestyle by exchanging unused or pre-loved items. Many thanks to Straits Quay Penang for sponsoring the venue for this meaningful event.

Malaysians produced close to 3 million tonnes of waste in year 2017. Presently, there are 150 solid waste disposal sites nationwide, whereby 74 of these available sites are expected to reach the ends of their lifespan by 2020. By creating public awareness about the zero waste practices as well as appreciate the values of unused or pre-loved items, the goal of reducing waste being sent to the only landfill in Penang whilst creating opportunities for zero waste economy can be achieved.

The trading event is now open to the public for online registration at All participants (maximum 3 individuals per group) must download Trash2Treasure mobile app and sign up as users for “Trade in Your Ex” upon registration for trading purpose.

Fees of RM20.00 will be charged upon registration; RM10.00 is for the commitment fee and RM10.00 is for deposit. The deposit will be refunded at the end of the event day. Please take note that only pre-loved in fairly good condition are allowed to trade during the event.

Meanwhile, traders who manage to get the total highest trading score when they trade during the event day and also via “Trade in Your Ex” in-app function will stand a chance to win a mysterious gift in the Barter Trade Competition.

Another highlight during the event day is the TUBA Collection (used light tubes and batteries) which starts from 12.00pm to 7.00pm. By pre-registering, the fee for the first kilogram (kg) of disposal will be waived, while a nominal charge of RM 5.00 will be imposed for every subsequent kg. Any walk-in without pre-registration will be charged at RM15.00 per kg.

For the information to all TUBA users, there are no laws and regulations in Malaysia for disposal of household TUBA at the moment. However, TUBA cannot be treated as general waste as these items contain chemicals that will pollute our water and soil! Hence, let’s recycle responsibly today for a better future tomorrow.
