Empowering Youth Environmental Leaders through Community-Based Programme

Press Statement on 20 July 2018

All youth leaders are called for action in Penang Green Council’s Youth for Environmental Sustainability Programme (YES). This programme aims to inspire passionate youths to take proactive steps in preserving our environment quality.

PGC has been mentoring five selected youth leaders to conduct community-based programmes which focus on waste management. “The group has better understanding in terms of waste management in Penang after we visited the Pulau Burung landfill as well as the Ampang Jajar transfer station. This has aided us in designing more comprehensive community programmes,” said two of the youth leaders, Lee Jia Yi and Calvin Chan Yi Xuan.

YES programme also highlighted the values of contributing back to the society and improving human connectivity. The youths have worked closely with two local organisations, the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) at Bandar Tasek Mutiara Utara & Selatan. This collaboration promotes leadership, identifies knowledge gaps and provides solutions for the community to properly handle their recyclables including electronic waste.
