Penang is the first state in Malaysia to launch a statewide initiative to reduce plastic bag consumption in all supermarkets and hypermarkets. This initiative has transformed the habits of both businesses and citizens to the point of reducing a shocking amount of 33 million plastic bags in total since the birth of “No Plastic Bag” campaign in 2009.

Objectives

  • Reduce the number of plastic bag usage that is harmful to environment
  • Increase the public awareness in preserving the environment
  • Reduce the state expenditure on solid waste disposal costs involving plastic bags

Applies to :

Hypermarket, Supermarket, Departmental store, Convenient store, Fast Food Restaurant, Petrol Station Convenient Store, Chain Store, Pharmacy

Does not apply to:

Hawkers & Traders

The charges for each plastic bag (RM1) are donated to the Tabung Agenda Ekonomi Saksama (AES)
