An Hour for Earth and for Us! Let’s Switch Off Our Lights

Press Statement by Ms Josephine Tan, General Manager of Penang Green Council on 24th March 2022.

For over a decade, the world has been celebrating Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights for an hour on the last Saturday of March. This is not just an action but it is an important movement on raising awareness of the current issues faced by our planet and start acting today!

Every year, Penang Green Council celebrates and supports Earth Hour as our small gesture to conserve Mother Earth. This year, on Saturday, 26 March 2022 at 8:30pm, Penang Green Council will be taking the lead to encourage all Penang’s business operators, such as shopping malls, hotels, factories and all Penangites to take part in this global movement by switching off our lights for 60 minutes together.

As the world tries to turn the tide and recover from the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are moving to build back better form. It is crucial for us to put our nature and environment at the centre of our recovery efforts to future proof our economies and for the benefit of our people.

By switching off your lights for an hour, you can make a substantial difference in energy consumption and can help reduce the effect of global warming on this planet. According to saving-light-bulbs.co.uk, around 19% of all electricity generated was used for lighting purposes which is a very significant proportion.

This year, Penang Green Council is glad and honoured to have 22 like-minded companies participating with us in this movement . Their participation is an assurance that the Penang State Government is not alone and you are not alone! I believe that inclusiveness will bring us to greater heights because together we can achieve more!

Your small action will bring great impact, an hour of darkness will bright up our future. I urge everyone to join us this year by switching off your lights for 60 minutes during Earth Hour to support this global movement. No matter where you are in the world, the little flick of your finger on the switch is very much appreciated.

Thank you.
