Zero Waste Corners

Zero Waste is a closed-loop system that introduces recycling materials productively, with none residual left to handle. This system encourages a well-planned management and product design that reduce the production of toxic materials and at the same time it sustains the natural resources. Instead of sending the trash to incinerators or landfills, this system implements composting and recycling. It aims to minimalize the number of waste being sent to the only landfill in Penang, which is in Pulau Burung.

With collaboration with selected Community Development and Security Committee (commercially known as Jawatankuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Komuniti (JKKK)), Penang Green Council (PGC) under the program of Kampungku/ Komunitiku Bersih dan Hijau, is initiating an effort called “Sudut Sisa Sifar” (Zero Waste Corner) and placing a number of recycle bins in those community areas. PGC also cooperate with recycler and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to increase the number of Zero Waste Corners in Penang.  The objectives of this effort are as following:

  1. To encourage recycling activities, reduce pollution and to protect the environment
  2. To reduce the quantity of waste being sent to the Pulau Burung Landfill
  3. To decrease the cost of waste disposal

The community areas with Zero Waste Corner include:

  • JKKK Taman Alma Jaya 1, Alma, Bukit Mertajam (Badminton Hall)
  • JKKK Kubang   Semang, Sg. Semambu,Mukim 5, Permatang Pasir (By the road of Sg. Semambu)
  • JKKK Mahsuri, Bayan Baru  (Jalan Tengah Hall, Gedung)
  • Komplek Bukit Jambul  Recycling Center, collaboration with  Infitech Machinery Sdn. Bhd and Bukit Jambul Complex

An approach to transform the usable waste into compost, this process is clean, cheap and safe. Also, it reduces the number of waste being disposed every day.
