Penang Green Innovation Incentive for environmental sustainability solutions

Penang Green Innovation Incentive is an annual scheme that provides cash grants and assistance for outstanding entries (innovative product, technology or process). For it to be considered, your innovative entry must be original, novel as well as commercially viable and applicable to Penang.

The Penang Green Innovation Incentive is an initiative designed to encourage innovation in environmental sustainability solutions that could be commercially viable and applicable to Penang with a view to tackle environmental degradation or reduce Penang’s carbon footprint.

The incentive programme is open to all Malaysian citizens. Applicants can be individuals (amateur or business), groups, or organizations (non-profit, SMEs, students, etc.). All applications must be made using the official application form available on the Penang Green Council’s website,

Applicants may submit more than one application, with the condition that the products, technologies or solutions cannot be interrelated. Applications must be submitted in separate forms. No entry fee is required. The closing date for this year’s application is May 31, 2013 (Friday).

The benefits of the incentive includes guidance on patent application and mentoring on entrepreneurship and product readiness, seed money of up to RM 50,000 and patent financing of up to RM 50,000 (total disbursement up to RM 200,000 each year).

Applications will be assessed against the Assessment Criteria. Shortlisted entries will be invited for an interview. The decision of the review panel shall be final. Applicants will retain the rights to their proposals. However, Penang Green Council (PGC Strategies Sdn Bhd) reserves the right to suspend or cancel the incentive programme without announcing a shortlists or winners.

The assessment criteria are categorized into three parts. (1) Value: Impact on Environment and Society, (2) Concept: Inspiration and Uniqueness, (3) Delivery: Implementation and Availability.

The review panel consists of the board members of Penang Science Council including Dato Seri Wong Siew Hai (Penang Tech Center), Ms Loo Cheng Cheng (Cultivating Innovation & Research), Mr Yew Tian Tek (Sustainable Education & Learning), Ms Yenni Lim (Life Sciences & Medical Health), Dato Seri Kelvin Kiew (Mentoring Young Scientific Entrepreneurs). Furthermore, the review panel also consist of the Special Officer of Penang Chief Minister Ms Yap Soo Huey (Science, Technology & Innovation), Dato' Mustafa Kamal (Director of Penang Science Council), Dato' Muthu Rengam Sathiah (Director of Penang Science Council), Mr Gurmit Singh (Chairman of the Board, founding Executive Director of CETDEM) and Mr Anil Netto (Honorary Treasurer of Aliran).

In order to ensure the applicants are serious and our funds will not be abused, the patenting is compulsory for the winners and start up their commercial development by using the seed money (up to RM 50,000).
