Penang Green Office Project: To Create Low Carbon, Greener, Cleaner, Healthier Working Environment in Penang

Most of us spend more than half of our working life in the office, in order to create a low carbon, greener, cleaner, healthier working environment for the office employees, Penang Green Council (PGC Strategies Sdn Bhd) will be launching Penang Green Office Project during the opening of Penang Green Expo 2012 on 22 September 2012, 11am at PISA.

The objective of Penang Green Office certification scheme is to support PGC's vision (Penang as a Green state that is clean, safe and harnesses green technology) by adopting the Green Office Concept through Education and Implementation of Green initiatives in the office.

During the launching of the project, visitors are invited to see the concept of "Green Office" through a mock-up house and office designed and built by SP Setia for the Penang Green Expo. During the two-day Green Expo, we will also distribute 1000 boxes of starter kits for any offices representatives who are interested in the project. The main sponsors for the starter kits are Konica Minolta and Tetra Pak.

We have set up a committee to plan and implement the project. PGC’s director Pat Chung has been appointed to chair the committee. The project is driven by public and private sectors including FREPENCA, Malaysian Association of Hotels (Penang Chapter), Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), The Association of Banks in Malaysia, Department of Environment, Forestry Department, Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBA), TNB, JKR, MPPP, MPSP and State Secretariat.

All public sector offices (Government, GLCs) and private sector offices of a registered business/organisation such as Factories, Banks, Supermarkets, Hotels, Trade / Business Groups, NGOs are welcome to participate in this project and get certified.  Penang Green Office initiatives encompass the following 8 criteria:

    1. Purchasing Office Equipment & Stationery

    4. Water Conservation
    5. Paper Usage Control
    6. Printer, Photocopier, Fax & Cartridges Control
    7. Indoor Air Quality Improvement
    8. Employee and Community Engagement

The participating office has to pass an online assessment which is available at, after that, they are eligible to apply for a site audit which is conducted by an appointed audit firm. The administration fee for the site audit is RM300 only for the first year.

Not only the certified offices are able to save a huge amount of operation cost and reduce carbon footprint, the certified offices will be given a certification plaque and certificate which is valid for two years. They will also have the right to use the Penang Green Office logo – “Penang Green Office” on company letterhead, correspondence, advertisements and other publicity materials, participation in the award presentation ceremony, participating department / office name to be published in PGC website.

We hope that by promoting green initiatives and practices in different community, we will see the seedlings of green economy that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. For example, the increasing demand of office products with green features will eventually create a new opportunity for the business community. In other words, we can think of a green economy as an economic environment that achieves low carbon emissions, works towards resource efficiency and at the same time is socially inclusive.
