Earth Hour Night Walk 2014 @ Esplanade by Carolyn Khor

Earth Hour is almost here again. Like all previous years, it has always been observed on the last Saturday of the month which means Earth Hour falls on 29 March this year. From 8:30 p.m., for an hour, concerned individuals and businesses will switch off their lights to lend support towards the combat against global warming.

The Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 with 2.2 million individuals and over 2000 businesses turning off unnecessary lights to make a stand against climate change. The organiser, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) successfully turned the event into a global scale movement with over 7000 cities and towns involved.

The Earth Hour campaign is targeted at individuals, businesses, government and communities. As there are increasing concerns towards climate change, WWF hopes to raise awareness on green living and leading a sustainable lifestyle through cutting down wastage and over-consumption in electrical appliances.

In conjunction with Earth Hour 2014, WWF-Malaysia and the Penang State Government will jointly organise a 3.5-km night walk at Jalan Padang Kota Lama from 8:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m. The walking trail will start at Jalan Padang Kota Lama, going through Lebuh Light, Lebuh Farquhar, Lebuh Leith, Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Pantai before heading back again to Jalan Padang Kota Lama. Activities will be carried out at the starting point from 6:30 p.m. onwards.

Penang Green Council encourages those who are interested to participate in the Earth Hour Campaign. Every effort counts and we can all do our part to help protect the environment.

Entry fee for the Earth Hour night walk is RM60 per person includes an Earth Hour T-shirt, sticker and an e-certificate of participation. Those interested may register and make an online payment at
