Penang Green Idol 2018 Public Speaking Competition

Penang Green Council (PGC) has organised the Penang Green Idol 2018 Public Speaking Competition on 8th April 2018, in conjunction with Earth Day Celebration at Sky-TV, Auto City.

The competition served as a platform for young generation to express their concerns and opinions on environmental issues and causes in Malaysia and sought to inculcate environmental values to help young people develop and practice an ethic of care towards the environment. This competition is also an initiative to raise awareness to conserve the environment in line with the Penang State Government’s vision to create a Cleaner, Greener, Healthier, Safer and Happier Penang.

“When it comes to issues of environment and sustainability, we believe that everyone should speak their minds without limitations of language and cultural values,” said Phee Boon Poh, the Vice-Chairman of Penang Green Council during his speech in the opening ceremony.

A total of 42 students, aged between 15 and 17, participated in the competition to speak up for environmental related issues.For the very first time, the Penang Green Idol is divided into four language categories, namely Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil. Participants expressed their views in the language of their choice with regard to various environmental related topics to win the judges’ hearts. Each participant was only given 3 minutes to prepare for the topic of their impromptu speeches, which is the most challenging part of the competition.

The champion of each category is crowned - Penang Green Idol 2018; they will help converging effort to spread revolutionary ideas and raise awareness in PGC's programmes and projects for the duration of one year. The winners of each category walked away with cash prizes worth RM1,000, RM800 and RM500 respectively:

Nine judges comprised the panel which include three lecturers from Universiti Sains Malaysia, an officer from Consumer Association of Penang (CAP), two members of the Toastmasters International and three officers from PGC. We thank Idealite, Auto-City for sponsoring this competition and Auto-City, which has given the opportunity to us to host the competition at Sky TV for free. The competition was also held concurrently with the Grow Community Market at Shop in d’Park, Auto-City, an organic market with locally grown produce, crafts and environmental activities, which connect the local community with local farmers, artists and green lovers at one place to eat fresher and live healthier. The market takes place on the second Sunday morning of every month.
