Opening speech by Phee Boon Poh, Penang State Exco Member, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee Chairman cum Vice-Chairman of Penang Green Council on 26 March 2017: 

PRELIMINARY STAGE OF PENANG GREEN IDOL PUBLIC SPEAKING

Good afternoon and welcome to everyone.

  • It is a great honour to officiate Penang Green Idol Preliminary stage.
  • I am indeed very happy to see the participation level and  interest shown by the youngsters in this competition.
  • A total of 71 participants have registered for the Penang Green Idol Public Speaking Competition.
  • We thank our collaborators, Penang Gavel Club for the training given to the participants and to 1st Avenue Mall for venue sponsor, Koo Bros for partially sponsoring the video production.
  • Penang Green Idol Public Speaking Competition - nurture critical thinking and enhance the young students’ knowledge and awareness on environment. We hope this learning platform will equip young children with skills to speak persuasively and to listen to the opinions of others on environmental issues and concerns, critically and constructively.
  • Engaging in public speaking is one of the best decisions a student can make.
    - enhance the participants’ public speaking and critical thinking skills
    -   make spontaneous responses and spreading revolutionary ideas.
  • We are committed to turning Penang into the first green state in Malaysia.  
  • Implementation of waste segregation at source policy in Penang reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill.
  • 40% of the waste sent to the landfill are food waste. We have installed Bio-regen food waste machines to convert food waste into bio-liquid soil enhancers.
  • Under CCAC  Project - Food Waste Diversion at Chowrasta Market, approximately 3200kg waste collected in 15 days from 28 business operators along Macalister Road and 22 business operators inside Chowrasta market.
  • Penang State Food Waste Challenge Incentive Programme, newly introduced this year as an incentive programme to hotels and factories with proper Food Waste Management System.
  • The FIRST 10 successful applicants for the year will receive RM 1000.
  • Campaign ‘Makan Sampai Habis’ was launched to educate people on the value of food and to increase public awareness about the importance of reducing food wastage.
  • When every household start practicing this, the amount of food waste can be greatly reduced.
  • Youth have strong social and environmental awareness, which has the power to take action and transform our societies towards a climate resilient and sustainable future.
  • I applaud all the participant who showed interest and took the challenge to stand on this platform and inspire us to leave a better world to our younger generation.
