Press Statement by Phee Boon Poh, Penang State Exco Member, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee Chairman cum Vice-Chairman of Penang Green Council on 8 April 2016:

In conjunction with the Earth Day Celebration 2016, I am happy to announce that Starbucks has come on board to join us as Penang Green Partner.

Worldwide, the migration from polystyrene cups usage to paper cups coated with plastic have caused environmental concerns and increase of carbon footprint. Most municipal councils have voiced their concerns. In Penang, MBPP and MPSP have also highlighted this issue.

As one of the leading International coffee chain, Starbucks acknowledged this global concern and they are trying to reduce consumption of disposable cups globally. We are positive that Starbucks is taking proactive initiative to set an example and work together with the consumers and government on improving their environmental responsibilities.

The State Government in the collaboration with Starbucks, we are promoting our newly design limited edition activity book "My Green Scavenger" and the use of washable and reusable Starbucks tumblers.

Penang Green Citizens can get the booklet by just following these simple steps:

1)    Get a book for FREE by purchasing any Grande size promotional beverage at Starbucks in Penang.

2)    Complete the activity in the book ‘My Green Scavenger’.

The activity book is designed by a famous comic artist - Lefty Julian. He has since returned to Penang and actively involved in the local art scene, his recent works include the "Marking George Town" iron rod art installation, "Airwells: Elemental Spaces" for George Town World Heritage Inc (GTWHI) and the "Pulau Tikus Community Stories" bus-stop art series."

This year, we are celebrating Earth Day on 17 Apr 2016 by organising the Penang Green Idol Talent Contest (Semi Final) at Sunway Carnival Mall Seberang Jaya. We thank Sunway Carnival Mall to be our venue sponsor. The event will take place on 17th April, from 2pm to 6pm at Sunway Carnival Mall.

Penang Green Idol allows participants to speak up their thoughts on environment through creative performances. The audition was held in KOMTAR on 19th March and the semifinal will be held during the Earth Day Celebration. The champions for each category will be crowned as Penang Green Idol during the finals on Penang Green Carnival in July.
