Opening Speech of Penang Green Idol 2018

Opening Speech by Phee Boon Poh, Penang Green Council Vice-Chairman on 8th April 2018 during Opening Ceremony of Penang Green Idol 2018 at SKY-TV Auto City, points as follow:

Good afternoon and welcome to everyone.

  • It is a great honour to officiate Penang Green Idol 2018.
  • Penang Green Idol 2018 – Public Speaking Competition is held in conjunction with Earth Day Celebration.
  • Earth Day is observed by many countries on April 22 every year to broaden and diversify the environmental movement worldwide. And we are of no exception this year, we celebrate Earth Day in advance to demonstrate support to build a healthy, sustainable environment, address climate change, and protect the Earth for future generations.
  • I would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to Golden Highway Auto-City Sdn. Bhd. for the being the venue sponsor and also Idealite Auto City for being the sponsor of Penang Green Idol 2018, thank you for all the supports given to this event.
  • I am indeed very happy to see the participation level and interest shown by the youngsters in this competition.
  • A total of 52 participants have registered for the Penang Green Idol – Public Speaking Competition this year.
  • Penang Green Idol 2018 Public Speaking Competition - nurture critical thinking and enhance the young students’ knowledge and awareness on environment. We hope this learning platform will equip students with skills to speak persuasively and to listen to the opinions of others on environmental issues and concerns, critically and constructively.
  • This year Penang Green Idol is a rather special one, we have categories in four languages: Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil for students to participate.
  • Malaysia is well-known as a multiracial and multicultural country. In Penang, it is very common to see that different races speak in different languages, and it is not rare to find someone multilingual.
  • However, when it comes to issues of environment and sustainability, we believe that everyone should speak their thoughts without the limitation of language or cultural value.
  • We all share one state, one nation and one Mother Earth. We also share the responsibilities to take care of the environment. It is time to unite everyone regardless the language barrier and cultural differences, to work together and go against environmental pollution. Together we can make Penang a “Cleaner, Greener, Safer, Healthier, and Happier” state.
  • We are committed to turning Penang into the first green state in Malaysia.
  • We are continuously promoting our green initiatives, such as free CAT BUS, No Free Plastic Bags Every day, total ban on polystyrene food containers, giving incentives to GBI certified buildings, building cycling lanes and introduce Link Bike sharing system, implementing Waste Segregation at Source policy.
  • In terms of Waste Segregation at Source policy, Penang has achieved the highest recycling rate in the country of 38% and we hope to increase the recycling rate to 50% by 2020.
  • Youth have strong social and environmental awareness, which has the power to take action and transform our societies towards a climate resilient and sustainable future.
  • I applaud all the participants who showed interest and took the challenge to stand on this platform and inspire us to leave a better world to our younger generation.

Good luck and all the best to all of you!
Thank you.
