What is Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) released directly or indirectly by an individual, organisation, event or product. Almost all the activities in our modern daily lives make up carbon footprint, such as using electricity, driving, taking flights, and even using various kinds of products. These greenhouse gases (GHG) are major contributors to climate change by trapping heat in the atmosphere and cause global warming.

In COP21 (21st Conference of the Parties), Malaysia aims to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 45% by 2030 relative to the emissions intensity of GDP in 2005 by taking development of the country into consideration. We can achieve this target if we do our part to reduce our own carbon emissions.

What can I do?
Calculate your carbon footprint using the tool below to see how much carbon pollution comes from your energy use at home and on the go compared to an average Malaysian and also worldwide.
In order to reduce your carbon footprint, here are 8 simple steps you can practice in your daily life:

  1. Switch off your electrical appliances completely after use
  2. Choose energy efficient products
  3. Take public transport
  4. Choose fuel efficient vehicles, or better, hybrid cars or electric cars
  5. Buy local products
  6. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
  7. Eat a low-carbon diet: buy local and organic food, eat less meat and dairy, consume less processed food
  8. Participate in tree-planting or reforestation projects
